Journal Post #3

egoism: the habit of valuing everything only in reference to one’s personal interest; selfishness

  • Most humans seem to fit the theory of egoism (see above). Is this wrong? Why or why not?
  • Give several examples of what we’ve studied this year of how egoism has brought good into the world and also brought bad. (DON’T TALK ABOUT HITLER AND THE HOLOCAUST, USE OTHER EXAMPLES. THINK!)

Rosa Parks challenges egoism with the quote below.

“Each person must live their life as a model for others.” -Rosa Parks

Her position would fall more in the lines of  altruism.

altruism: the principle or practice of unselfish concern for or devotion to the welfare of others

  • What do you think Rosa Parks means in her quote above? (Explain with DEPTH and DETAIL)
  • How does it tie into egoism vs. altruism?
  • Why do you think she believes that it’s important for each person must live their life as a model for others?
  • Lastly, but most importantly, do you agree or disagree with Rosa Parks? Why or why not? (Explain with DEPTH and DETAIL)

Journal Post #2

Tolerance: a fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward those whose opinions, practices, race, religion, nationality, etc., differ from one’s own; freedom from bigotry.

  • Why is tolerance such a difficult value for most people to have?
  • Why do you think intolerance has existed since the beginning of human history in some form or another?
  • Describe some examples of intolerance that we’ve studied this year in World History. (Unit 1 - Unit 8)
  • Do you think there is a difference of people’s tolerance between first, second, and third world nations? Do you think the different government systems (Monarchies, Democracies, Socialist, or Totalitarian) we’ve studied this year shows a difference in people’s tolerance level?

Journal Post #1

*If your username for tumblr doesn’t have your first name, you will need to write your name at the beginning of your post so I know it’s you. That’s if you want credit :P*

Write a journal entry/blog post regarding what you watched in class today. Use the following guiding questions for your blog post. Please write this in paragraph form, do not just answer these questions one by one like a worksheet. Avoid general and vague descriptions. Use details from the video to support your post. You will be graded on the quality of content and thoroughness of your post. Here’s their website as a reference: www.congojustice.com

  • Describe the crisis that has and is happening in the Congo. How did this situation come about?
  • Describe the types of people involved and how they are being affected.
  • How did you react when you learned about the reality of the crisis in the Congo?
  • In class we talked about the statement “learn from history, live accordingly.” Explain what you’ve learned from today and if it has or will change your life in anyway. Is this something you will share with others about?
